It was finally a few minutes before eight o’clock. Illusion Wizards was about to start. Noah had already set up the MegaPix to record, so we’d be able to zap in first thing the next morning. Rosalie Claire brought in popcorn and we all gathered to watch the show.

This time when my kid-dad sat next to me, I didn’t have the urge to scoot away.

The theme music played as we watched the red velvet curtain on stage rise. The host, Brian Seeley, came out wearing a white tuxedo and a slick smile. His overly chipper voice made him sound like he was selling cars. “Welcome! You are about to witness the most spectacular show in the history of magic. Six world-class magicians will dazzle us with their illusions and I guarantee they will take your breath away! First up? The clever, crafty, Dante Leonardo!”

When Leonardo took the stage, he tipped his top hat and bowed. Then we watched in amazement as he turned an ordinary woman into Superwoman — or at least a woman who was incredibly strong. She sat on a wooden chair, lit by a spotlight. The magician hypnotized her with a crystal and then, in a trance, she spread her arms out to her sides. Leonardo ran his hands over them, giving her superhuman strength. Two more women in sparkly suits came onstage, carrying short ladders. They climbed up on them and each stepped onto one of the hypnotized woman’s arms. Then another guy took the ladders away, and VOILA! The woman with super-strength held up both of them on her arms without a flinch or a twitch.

Everyone in the TV audience went crazy.

He did a few more tricks, but the one that really had me scratching my head was when his assistant rolled out a giant wooden crate and a pile of shiny metal parts. Leonardo opened the front door of the crate while his assistant, who he called Cassie, opened the back one, proving it was empty. Then he stepped inside. We watched as he stood in the open crate, assembling the metal pieces into a life-sized suit of armor. When it was complete, he stepped out. While he closed the front door, Cassie shut the back one. Then with a sweep of his arm, the magician lifted a sword from what looked like an umbrella stand and danced around the box, casting a magic spell.

When the two of them threw open the doors again, the suit of armor stood right where he’d left it. Just when I thought maybe he’d fouled up the trick, the armor came to life. It stole Dante Leonardo’s sword straight out of his hand. The magician grabbed a second sword and the two fought a duel. At last he chased the guy in armor back into the box. Leonardo and Cassie quickly shut the doors, and she wheeled it away before the curtain came down.

“How did he do that?” Violet gasped. “And pass the popcorn, please.”

“My theory is that there are two sets of armor.
